Abstract: The literature on job satisfaction has shown that, on average, women declare a higher degree of satisfaction than men, even though their working conditions are generally less attractive. However, the theories mobilized to explain this paradox (expectation theory and preference theory) suggest that it should disappear for higher levels of education. We test this by looking at the effect of gender on doctoral graduates’ satisfaction with the start of their postdoctoral careers, while taking into account the quality of their employment conditions. Our data come from a survey of PhDs who defended in the Paris region between 2012 and 2015 and who have found a job since then, either in the public or private sector. We show through models with mediation effects that gender has no significant effect, either directly or indirectly (via working conditions), on satisfaction with the start of a post-doctoral career, while working conditions are significantly and positively linked to satisfaction.
