Margherita Comola participated at Paris Migration Seminar (PMS) the december 5. She presented her paper Network Formation in Quasi-Experimental Agrarian Reform Settlements: Evidence from Brazil (with Mariapia Mendola).
Abstract:
This paper investigates the formation of social networks in a newly created village economy in Brazil, resulting from the establishment of agrarian reform settlements led by landless workers’ movement. We use data from a tailored survey on all households in the village to study the endogenous formation of network links related to both farm labor arrangements and social ties. We find evidence that group identity is long lasting, and that geographical characteristics of the plots have an effect beyond physical distance.
