HDR Thesis Abstract: Understanding the socioeconomic vulnerability of specific population segments presents significant empirical challenges. Highly vulnerable groups often make up a small proportion of the general population and their marginalization results in a form of statistical invisibility across many available public, administrative, or representative datasets. While reducing socioeconomic inequalities is periodically a stated objective of public policies, the lack of empirical evidence on socioeconomically disadvantaged groups may lead to ill-adapted policy responses and fuel self-perpetuating crises. This document provides a comprehensive overview of my past and ongoing research projects on some of the most vulnerable groups, such as migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and, more recently, extremely poor people and LGBT+ individuals in developing countries. In collaboration with scholars from different fields in social science, as well as with civil society organizations and public structures, my research uses unique primary data collected in the field or gathers original data sources to better understand the causes and consequences of the socioeconomic marginalization of vulnerable groups, with the aim of identifying innovative, inclusive interventions to enhance their socioeconomic outcomes, and, ultimately their contribution to society.
