Abstract: Most of the literature on internal migration discards workers’ cost of switching occupations, which could result in overestimating the cost of geographical mobility of workers. We first present empirical evidence on the role of occupational characteristics in influencing geographical mobility. We further develop a dynamic choice model to analyze how workers select among various work locations and occupations. The model contributes to the current dispute on decreasing internal migration by allowing for choices across both geography and occupation. Using detailed administrative French worker-level data, we show that geographical mobility costs are considerably lower when occupational characteristics are considered.
